Parent consultations and parent support programmes
PARENT CONSULTATIONS AND PARENT SUPPORT PROGRAMMES
As parents of children experiencing significant distress, we are required not only to support our children and understand the factors underlying their difficulties, but also to manage our own sadness and self-doubt. At the same time, we may need to collaborate with schools, local authorities and educational psychology services, while also managing the practical demands associated with school absence. For most families, this can become an extensive and overwhelming responsibility.
At Gifted Institute, we have supported many families on the journey from profound distress and disengagement back to school attendance and a more stable and fulfilling everyday life. Through this work, we have developed considerable experience in supporting families who find themselves without sufficient energy, direction or hope, and in helping them identify the first manageable steps towards positive change.
This process is rarely completed quickly. However, with an appropriate focus and a thorough understanding of what the child experiences as insurmountable, the immediate future may become more manageable and may gradually provide a foundation for hope regarding the longer term.
Our work is grounded in cognitive and systemic perspectives on the challenges experienced by gifted and twice-exceptional children and young people. This approach facilitates both a more comprehensive understanding of the child’s situation and the identification of potential pathways towards improved well-being and functioning.
Gifted Institute offers parent supervision and parental guidance both as individual consultations and as longer-term support programmes. These programmes include structured work between sessions, most often in the form of specific areas of attention, observations or small-scale practical experiments. This process generates additional knowledge for subsequent consultations and contributes to an increasingly clear understanding of underlying causes, maintaining patterns and potential solutions.
